France and Spain meet in Dallas on Tuesday in a World Cup semi-final with history and expectation surrounding both sides.
For France, victory would secure a third consecutive appearance in the final. For Spain, it would move the European champions within one win of becoming only the fourth nation to hold the continental and world titles at the same time.
At 27, Kylian Mbappe is already one of the most productive World Cup players the game has seen. At 19, Lamine Yamal is searching for the performance that could transform his first World Cup from promising to unforgettable.
Their duel could decide who reaches the final in New Jersey on 19 July.

Mbappe Arrives as the Tournament’s Dominant Force
Mbappe has scored eight goals in six matches, placing him level with Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot race. He has also contributed three assists, taking his total involvement to 11 goals, more than any other player at the competition.
The France captain announced himself globally in 2018, when his speed and ruthlessness overwhelmed Argentina in the last 16. He scored twice in that match and later found the net in the final as France lifted the trophy.
Four years later, he scored a hat-trick in another final, only to finish on the losing side against Argentina.
Now, Mbappe has 19 World Cup goals. Only Messi, with 20, has scored more. He has already passed Miroslav Klose’s former benchmark of 16.
The forward scored 42 goals in 44 appearances for Real Madrid last season, finishing as the leading scorer in both La Liga and the Champions League.
A More Complete Version of France’s Captain
Despite his goals for Real Madrid, Mbappe has not yet lifted a major trophy in the Spanish capital. His first two seasons ended without silverware, creating debate over whether his brilliance was translating into collective success.
At this World Cup, Mbappe has shown greater willingness to press, track opponents and contribute when France do not have the ball. The change has helped his side win possession higher up the pitch and attack before opponents can reorganise.
Former France striker Olivier Giroud believes the captain’s rise has always been driven by conviction.
“For me, it is ambition and confidence. He knows where he wants to go. He is a leader, and you could see from a young age that he was mature and comfortable with responsibility.”
Mbappe recently overtook Giroud as France’s leading goalscorer and now has 64 goals in 104 appearances.
Comparisons with Zinedine Zidane and Michel Platini are now unavoidable. Another World Cup victory would strengthen the argument that Mbappe deserves to be considered the greatest French footballer of all time.
Lamine Yamal Is Waiting for His World Cup Moment
The Barcelona winger turned 19 on Monday and already has a European Championship medal, a Ballon d’Or runner-up finish and a reputation as the most gifted young attacker in world football.
After establishing himself at Barcelona, he became one of the defining players of Euro 2024 and helped Spain lift the trophy.
This summer, however, he has scored only once in five World Cup starts.
A hamstring injury suffered in April disrupted his preparation, while Spain’s tactical approach has also changed. With Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams not always operating at full intensity, manager Luis de la Fuente has placed greater emphasis on control, possession and defensive security.
That has reduced the open spaces in which Lamine Yamal is most dangerous. Opponents have also doubled up on him, knowing how heavily Spain rely on his ability to create something unexpected.
De la Fuente has urged patience.
“He is 19. I have asked him to be calm, enjoy his football and forget about anxiety. The big day for Lamine has not arrived yet at this World Cup.”
Tuesday would be the perfect time for it to arrive.
Spain Need Decisive Moments, Not Constant Dominance
The numbers suggest Lamine Yamal has struggled in front of goal, but they do not tell the full story.
He has converted one of his 23 shots, compared with eight goals from 30 attempts for Mbappe. He has not recorded an assist, while the France captain has three.
However, Lamine Yamal’s expected assists figure suggests he has created good opportunities that his team-mates have failed to finish. He has also completed twice as many dribbles as Mbappe, made eight tackles to the Frenchman’s one and regained possession high up the pitch more frequently.
In Spain’s quarter-final win over Belgium, he won more duels than any of his team-mates.
“This is the moment for him. Not the moment to score 10 goals, but the moment to be decisive in decisive matches,” said De la Fuente.
Spain do not need Lamine Yamal to dominate for 90 minutes. They need two or three moments in which he escapes pressure, beats a defender or produces the pass nobody else can see.
Against France, one moment may be enough.
A Rivalry Already Filled With Goals and Drama
Lamine Yamal scored a spectacular equaliser when Spain came from behind to beat France 2-1 in the Euro 2024 semi-final.
A year later, he scored twice as Spain defeated France 5-4 in a thrilling Nations League semi-final, with Mbappe also scoring.
Across their previous 10 meetings, Lamine Yamal has finished on the winning side eight times. Yet Mbappe has scored nine goals in those matches, compared with six for the Spaniard.
Spain have often found a way to win, while Mbappe has consistently found a way to score.
The nations have met only once at a World Cup. In 2006, France recovered from going behind to win 3-1 in the last 16, inspired by Zidane.
Twenty years later, another French superstar has the chance to shape the fixture.
A Semi-Final That Could Define Two Careers
For Mbappe, this is another opportunity to strengthen a legacy already built around the World Cup. Reaching a third consecutive final as France captain would place him in exceptionally rare company.
For Lamine Yamal, the challenge is different. He does not need to match Mbappe’s tournament numbers. He needs to influence the biggest match of his young career.
One player is chasing records, while the other is chasing his breakthrough moment. One leads the tournament’s most destructive attack, while the other provides the creative spark within its most controlled possession side.
By the end of the night in Dallas, either Mbappe will be one step closer to a second World Cup title, or Lamine Yamal will have helped eliminate the tournament’s outstanding player and carried Spain into the final.
Only one of them will have the chance to finish the job in New Jersey.
